From tree to tree

The mulberry tree is the starting point, the basis of what I do. These tress stand in the places they were born in and are not cut down. Hanji paper is made in ecological friendship: only the annual branches of the mulberry tree are harvested, without any logging.

The mulberry branches are steamed to separate the core and bark. The bark, the brown outer skin, is scraped off; underneath there is a bright inner skin. This is the raw material of hanji: only this is used. The inner skin is boiled, beaten with a bat to make it into fibre, then mixed with water. The liquid hanji is floated on a bamboo screen which acts like a gauze; the water sinks through and the mulberry fibres form a solid sheet on top. This is how we take a branch and make hanji. 

I tried to visualize the process of tree bark becoming paper. Starting with the mulberry tree to make hanji, I then use this magical material to create forms in the shapes of trees. Two dimensions become three-dimensions: these hanji paper sculptures use the essence of the tree in nature to create trees which are works of art. So, these sculptures are about a circular poetry, the tree in nature becoming a tree in art, with no added material.

The whole exercise has also been about the bringing together of Korean culture from the earliest times with the contemporary world. By dealing with history in my own way, I hope to develop new textures and surfaces, and perhaps a new aesthetic sensibility.

작업의 시작점은 닥나무이다. 이 나무들은 베어지지 않고 태어난 자리에 우뚝 서있다. 한지는 벌목하지 않고 닥나무의 일년생 가지만을 베어 만드는 친환경 수확을 한다. 

닥나무 가지는 쪄서 속대와 껍질 부를 분리하는데 이 중 갈색의 외피는 칼로 긁어내고 밝은 내피만을 원료로 사용한다. 내피를 삶고 방망이로 두들겨 섬유화 시킨 뒤, 커다란 물통에 넣고 섞는다. 물통에 대나무 발을 담갔다 올린다. 닥나무 섬유는 대나무발 위에 쌓이고 수분은 여과된다. 이렇게 닥나무 가지는 한지가 된다.

닥나무껍질이 종이가 되는 과정을 시각화하기 위해 닥나무를 사용하여 나무의 형태를 만든다. 2차원의 종이가 3차원의 조각이 된다. 자연 속 나무의 본질을 이용하여 예술 작품인 나무가 만들어진다. 어떤 재료도 첨가되지 않은 채 본질과 순수성을 유지하며 만들어진 이 조각들은 자연 속의 나무가 예술 로서의 나무가 되는 순환성을 시적으로 표현한다. 작업의 과정을 통해 작가는 역사를 돌아보고, 본인만의 방식으로 해석하며, 과거의 문화를 현대에 접목하여 새로운 질감과 미감을 표현하고자 하였다.
