Hap-juk-seon (Folding Fan)

A collaboration between craftsmen and artists

Kim DaeSeong, Shin Hyeon-se, and Kim HyunJoo,
A perfect fusion of traditional and contemporary art. The Hanji paper was made by master craftsman Shin Hyeon-se, who has been declared a Korean Intangible Cultural Asset. The Fan itself was made by Master Kim Dae-seong, who is the son of Fan Master and Korean Intangible Cultural Heritage, Kim Dong-sik. Kim Dae-seong keeps the grand tradition alive.  
The fan was designed, dyed and painted by contemporary artist-designer Kim Hyun-joo.

Hapjukseon is made by stacking strong bamboo strips on top of each other, so it becomes resilient and takes the wind well. The method was passed down from generation to generation through hundreds of years. Unlike other asian fans that use only an inner rod for support, the numerous bamboo stems give a durability and strength to the Hapjukseon.
The black and white gradation that can be seen when the fan is unfolded shows the feeling of mist that can be seen in the mountains in the early morning.

Hanji, the result of myriad processes, and Hapjukseon, which passes through even more skilled hands before arriving as a finished work of art, are useful not simply for their ability to mimic a cooling breeze: they are beautiful objects for contemplation, designed just to be looked at.

부채장인과 한지작가의 합죽선 콜라보레이션

국가무형문화재 신현세 장인이 뜬 한지, 김현주 작가의 디자인, 염색 과 칠 작업, 그리고 국가무형문화재 제 128호 선자장 김동식 이수자 김대성 장인이 만든 부채

합죽선은 튼튼한 대나무 겉대 두 개를 포개어 만들기 때문에 탄력이 있고 바람도 잘 일으킨다. 과거에는 대를 물려 몇 백년도 쓰였다고 한다. 속대만 사용하는 아시아권의 부채와는 다르게 겉대를 붙여 만들어지며 촘촘한 대나무살수로 인한 견고함이 우리나라 합죽선의 장점이자 큰 차이점이다.
부채를 펼치면 볼 수 있는 흑과 백의 그라데이션은 이른 새벽 산에서 볼 수 있는 운무의 느낌을 보여주는데 우리가 부채 선면에서 많이 볼 수 있는 산수화의 느낌을 추상적으로 표현한 것 이다.

백번의 손길의 거쳐 완성되는 한지, 백오십번의 손길이 거쳐 완성되는 합죽선은 시원한 바람뿐 아니라 두고 보아도 아름다운 오브제이다.
