Make a Wish I

During the global pandemic I stayed in Korea and concentrated on making sculpture. Cutting stone with hand tools requires a lot of strength, time, and patience. However, in the quiet of the studio, I enjoyed taking the time to carve, dress and polish the stone myself, because I had the pleasure of making it, and now wanted the expectation of finishing work.

The new ‘Make a Wish’ series consists of small sculptures that work on a table-top. I wanted to get through the difficult times we are experiencing with a positive mind and I wanted to deliver a message of hope that this period will soon end. These small stone sculptures express the fundamental idea of nature, they reflect the reverence we have for nature, its spiritual aspects, which lead us to make wishes and promises in front of it.

The first works explore three themes:
1. A place where a dragon passes
2. A night of the full moon
3. A Wish Stone

We might make a wish by contemplating the place where a dragon has passed; or on the night of a bright and big full moon; or by rubbing a wish stone that sends good luck when you touch it.

I hope the series will bring inner peace to those who look at it. By looking at a sculpture, perhaps put by the bedside, a wish can be made, and hope can flow. The ‘Make a wish’ series consists of individually-made unique pieces, each in a completely different form, as each is a wish stone for an individual to contemplate.
 

글로벌 팬데믹 상황에서 한국에 머물며 조각 작업을 집중했다. 돌을 수공구로 깎는 작업은 힘도 시간과 인내심도 많이 필요로 한다. 그러나 조용한 작업실에서 온전히 돌을 다듬는 시간은 만드는 즐거움, 완성작에 대한 기대가 있기에 즐기며 작업을 하였다.

‘소원을 빌다’ 연작은 테이블 위에 올려둘 수 있는 작은 조각이다. 현재 우리가 겪고 있는 어려운 시기를 긍정적인 마음으로 버텨내고 이 시기가 곧 끝나길 바라는 희망의 메세지를 전하고 싶었다. 자연을 경외하고, 그 앞에서 소원을 빌거나 다짐을 하는 행동을 반영하여 자연의 모습을 작은 돌 조각으로 표현하였다.

첫 발표는 3가지 주제로 
1. 용이 지나다니는 자리
2. 보름달이 뜬 밤
3. 소원돌
을 표현하였다. 용이 지나간 자리를 보며, 밝고 큰 보름달이 뜬 밤에, 혹은 만지면 행운이 온다는 소원돌을 문지르며 소원을 빌다. 

나는 침대 옆 놓어 둔 조각을 보며 소원을 말하고 희망을 갖는 것만으로도 누군가에게 이너피스 (마음의 평화)를 줄 수 있기를 바란다.  ‘소원을빌다’ 연작 결과물은 누군가를 위한 소망돌이기에 모두 다른 모양으로 하나씩 만드는 유니크 피스이다.
